SMSTS - 5 day course

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This course is intended for project managers, site managers and supervisors as well as proprietors of small to medium sized companies. Client based personnel would also benefit from attending the course. Possession of this qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practise for the Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site manager. AIMS: To give an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for site safety, health and welfare, current health & safety legislation. COURSE CONTENT: Health and Safety at Work Act CDM Regulations 2007 Site set-up Risk assessments/method statements Working at height Scaffolding Electricity Excavations Demolition Confined spaces Recent changes in accepted working practices CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT: Continuous assessment by the trainer with an end of course multiple choice assessment and group assessment exercises. QUALIFICATION: On successful completion of the course and final assessment the candidate will receive an industry recognised CITB certificate valid for 5 years.

SMSTS Refresher - 2 day

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The two-day refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full five-day (SMSTS) course and can provide proof of attendance. AIMS: It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics many building on the previous five-day course programme as well as introducing new subjects. Be aware of and able to implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affect them in their role as a manager. Be aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry of best practice. SSSTS - 2 day course

COURSE TITLE: SSSTS – Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This course is for first line managers – those who have, or are about to acquire supervisory responsibilities. It provides an introduction to health and safety, welfare and environmental issues for those requiring and understanding of their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will provide a sound knowledge base to enable them to give valuable assistance in safely managing a construction site. AIMS: To ensure candidates have an overview of their responsibilities for health and safety on construction sites. This course provides the ideal introduction for those supervisors who have had some or little previous health and safety training. It can be used as a precursor to attendance on the five-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course. COURSE CONTENT: Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant regulations Specific site issues, which include such topics as work at height Tool Box Talks (Short Duration Training) Control of subcontractors Health issues CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT: Continuous assessment by the trainer with an end of course multiple choice assessment and group assessment exercises. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This course is to help those who are due to commence work, or have begun to work in the industry to understand the potential hazards on site. It provides a practical summary of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, identifying the delegate’s responsibility for looking after themselves and others, outlines the employer’s duties and explains what should be done if the employee thinks anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk. The course is an ideal foundation for those wishing to obtain an industry accreditation card. AIMS: This classroom based course is to ensure that individual responsibilities are understood: Why they are carrying out their identified duties, and What is expected of them, and To ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace to ensure that at the end of the course delegates will be able to: Understand the need to prevent accidents Have an understanding of health and safety law. Identify how their role fits into the control and management of the site Understand the need for risk assessments and method statements. Appreciate the need to perform safely and to stop and ask for advice if not sure. Feel obliged to report unsafe acts to prevent an accident. COURSE CONTENT: General responsibilities Hazardous substances Accident prevention and reporting Electrical safety Health and welfare introduced Hand held equipment Manual handling Noise and vibration Working at height Site transport PPE Excavations Emergency procedures and first aid Confined spaces Fire prevention and control Safety signs CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT: Multiple choice question paper. QUALIFICATION: On successful completion it is anticipated that delegates would arrange for a touch screen test. It is therefore, considered that it would not be appropriate for an exam re-sit in the event of not achieving the pass mark; rather that the delegates employer should be encouraged to arrange for some time for coaching of the delegate concerned.
